Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take you to mix and master a song? Do I have to be there during the process?

Generally for a project that includes drums, bass, guitars, keys, and vocals it will take me about a half day to appropriately mix the entire song. This does not include more time intensive tasks like excessive vocal tuning and time aligning multiple takes. I prefer to have you around whenever I work. This tends to minimize the number of revisions, and I can get a more complete picture of what you're looking for. It also helps facilitate more experimentation and makes for a better song in my opinion. I can master in the same session, but I prefer to have some time (~2 weeks) in between mixing and mastering to clear my ears or send my mix to another mastering engineer to have them work on it.

I recorded a song at home. Will you mix it for me?

I'd love to! As long as you can send me the individual stems of every instrument and voice in a neatly labelled Google Drive folder, Dropbox link, or USB drive, I will happily work on home recordings. Be wary of your recording technique and equipment available. Some problems are impossible to solve after the recording, and other problems will incur additional fees if extra labor is required to solve them. For additional information, see this FWRS pre-mixing checklist.

I'm recording a song with you. What should I bring with me?

Anything you want on the recording! I have many guitars, basses, drums, keyboards, brass, wind, and percussion elements that you're welcome to use, but I want you to sound like YOU! So bring what gives you joy, regardless of how weird or janky it is. As long as it's in tune and playable. Typically, I prefer to use my drum set since it minimizes setup time, and I find it really suits the sound of my room well. Drummers tend to bring their own snare, sticks, and cymbals.

Why should I record to a metronome? How do I practice recording to a click?

Recording to a metronome is one of the best ways to keep musicians on the same page. It gives a reference for feel, it keeps musicians from straying from each other, and, in the studio, it gives the engineer the option to edit together options from different takes and time align them to a grid. Any track recorded without a metronome will not be edited in this way.

What do I need to prepare for you before our session?

To ensure a booking, I require all my clients to sign a contract that highlights the studio's policies and rules. Additionally, I require a nonrefundable deposit to secure the date. Till these things are met, I will give the proposed date to whoever is able to provide me these things first.

What are your rescheduling / cancellation policies?

Cancelling or rescheduling a session without minimum 2 days notice will incur an additional $100 fee. Down payment is nonrefundable. Any late payments will incur an additional $25 fee. If that is not paid alongside the original amount, the session is cancelled and any deliverables will not be sent.

Can I smoke or vape?

No drugs and alcohol, including vaping, inside the building. Inebriated clients will be removed from a session at the discretion of the engineer.
